  • Article @ Fibromyalgia and Hormones: Is There A Connection?

Before reading this article I fully expected this to discuss the fluctuating hormones associated with menopause..
However I had long ago recognized that although I had a viral illness which felt like the flu at the onset of my Fibromyalgia/ CFID experience: I also had had just weaned my son after a long experience breastfeeding. Knowing the research discussing the relationship between having a male child and the onset of autoimmune disorders, and the symptom overlap and co- morbidity with fibromyalgia, has brought many questions to mind.
    1) Have others experienced any of the same elements in the onset of this disorder?
This article does speak to pregnancy and breastfeeding cessation as an entry point..
Similiarly, the oft time initiation of the perception of this malady following a seemingly viral illness...( I use these qualifiers simply because in my case, I didn't seek confirmation medically.
Others questions arise from the issues arising in this article:
What about the differences which may be found in males? In children or teens? Are these the same illnesses? Is the androgen levels different in those which have males vs.female children?
Also, in those which follow the ending of breastfeeding, what other, if any, hormone changes may be interacting with fibromyalgia?
Many intriguing factors are introduced in the exploration of this link between fibro and hormones...
  • I apologize for the lack of progressing and necessary corrections..typing on my phone.
I hope this hasn't resulted in too much distraction in considering my comment..
  • @NewLifeOutlook
I am in perimenopause when my fibro symptoms began. I did see a hormone doctor per my General Practitioners suggestion. My hormones were definitely fluctuating but I was still having my periods regularly. My testosterone was almost non existent. I decided to try bioidentical hormone therapy with testosterone pellets inserted. I do believe they help but when my stress levels get high I do have flares. I have to get the pellets inserted every 4 months but now we are going to do them at 3.5 months because my fibro symptoms start to get bad again at about that point when they are beginning to wear off. My Rheumatologist also suggested that she has read about a link between fluctuating estrogen levels and fibro flares. Since I am not taking any estrogen replacement at this point I don't know but that is her belief.
  • Wow I am so glad I found this!! I went through the exact same thing as you. While I was pregnant my fibromyalgia completely went away!!! I have had fibromyalgia since my early twenties! It has been awful but somehow I learned to cope and deal with it throughout the years. At 34 I decided to have another baby and much to my surprise once I got pregnant I felt great better than I have felt in years ……all my Fibromyalgia symptoms disappeared during my pregnancy and even the 9 months after while I was breastfeeding! But when I stopped breastfeeding all the symptoms came back with a vengeance! This cannot be a coincidence it has to be hormones so I went to a so-called fibro specialist and told him my concerns and asked if he could put me on some kind of hormones that mimic pregnancy! Of course this doctor told me there’s no way that those two are linked and he’s never heard anything like that happening before! So here I sit at a dead end but I know that it has to have something to do with hormones and I’m not crazy!!!! I have had many previous thyroid test in the past that all came back within normal ranges but there has to be more in-depth testing that someone can do!? There has to be some kind of hormones they can give me so I can feel better again! I just have no idea where to go or where to start or how to find somebody who believes me and doesn’t think that I’m crazy or it’s all in my head! I have done a lot of research and I have found nothing until now about this! You are the first person that I have found that had the same thing happened to them while pregnant and breastfeeding and I am so grateful that I found this and you! This just proves that I'm not crazy and I'm not the only one!!! Why isn’t there any research about pregnancy and fibromyalgia!? I knew that I couldn't be the only person that this is happened to!? This could potentially be life-changing if some kind of hormone replacement could cure our fibromyalgia and could potentially cure millions of others too!!! I don’t know where we can go from here or who to see or who to talk to but I know that I felt normal again for a short 18 months after 15 years a feeling terrible everyday!! I had energy my body didn’t hurt even though I was carrying a whole nother body inside of me!! I just want to feel normal again I want to be a good mom to my kids I want to enjoy life and not be in pain everyday! So if you have any suggestions on what I can do or where I can go or who I can see I would greatly appreciate it also if anyone else has went through the same during pregnancy I would love to hear from you maybe we all can work together to try to get someone to listen!! I got a glimpse of what normal feels like again and I just want it back!!! I know it's possible now and this doesn't have to be a life sentence!!!
