Traveling with Fibromyalgia

Traveling can be a fun and exciting experience, but traveling with fibromyalgia can be difficult.

Watch the video above to hear Jennifer’s tips for traveling with fibromyalgia, or read the written summary below.

  • Create a checklist. This will reduce the risk of you forgetting something important.
  • Give yourself plenty of time to pack. This way you can do a little here and there whenever you're feeling up to it.
  • Travel light. Pack only the necessities so you can travel light.
  • Keep important items separate. Pack a separate bag with important things so that you can keep it close by. Bring things that will help you feel comfortable, because comfort is key while traveling. You could include:
    • Lotions and ointments to help relieve pain
    • Medications
    • Numbers of doctors and emergency contacts
    • Insurance cards
    • Music to help you relax
    • Comfy socks, gloves and a hat
    • Earplugs
    • Lip balm or moisturizer
    • A refillable container for water
    • A book or magazine to help pass time.
  • Stick to your sleep schedule. As much as is possible, try to go to sleep and wake up at the same times as you normally would.
  • Stick to your eating schedule. Eat your meals and snacks at the same times as you normally would.
  • Watch out for trigger foods. You may have to stop at restaurants and eat food that you normally wouldn't, so watch out for foods you know are triggers for you.
  • Make sure your traveling companions know what to expect. Before the trip, sit down with them and talk with them, so they know ahead of time that you may need to go a little slower and you might not be able to participate in all the activities they have planned.
  • Take it easy. Have fun but know your limits. Try not to plan too many day-to-day activities. Pick out activities that you like to do and do them whenever you're feeling up to it.
  • Make time to rest. This is important even if you don't feel like you need to, and can help prevent flare-ups.

I really hope that these tips are helpful and that your next trip will be a relaxing and enjoyable experience.
